As I mentioned before, we are a family of geeks. When I got the invitation to preview Marvel’s The Avengers, I jumped on it. Seriously. I responded in minutes. My husband and I were psyched to be among the first in Houston to see what promised to be a fantastic movie.
And ooooh, baby.
“Marvel’s The Avengers” is based on the Marvel comic created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. The first “Avengers” comic was published in September 1963 and the lineup consisted of Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Ant-Man and Wasp. Captain America joined the team in Issue #4, after being revived from being trapped in a block of ice. This film brings together Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Captain America (Chris Evans), Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) when they are called to duty by S.H.I.E.L.D. Director Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson). This movie is written and directed by Joss Whedon, and this fangirl can so tell.
Part of Joss Whedon’s trademark is snappy lines, and this film didn’t disappoint. It had the comic book story, it had the action, and it had all the snarky lines that you’d expect from a Whedon production. In short, this is quite possibly the best movie I’ve seen in a while, and definitely the best comic book movie.
“I still believe in heroes.” – Nick Fury
And we want to believe that our heroes will always save the day, always fight the good fight.
This movie left me wanting more, and eagerly anticipating the next movie in the franchise, which will be out next year.
The violence in this movie is a bit much for younger viewers. I wouldn’t take anyone under 6 or 7 to this movie, and I would definitely not take Jamey because of his sensory issues. However, you know your child best, etc. It is definitely rated PG -13 for good reason.
If you’ve seen the movie, what did you think? Would you take a younger child to see it?
Disclosure: I attended the movie screening free as a member of the press. I was not compensated in any other way, except maybe for cool points from my husband.
